Topical Acne Treatment Products

 

You’ll be spoiling for choice on the vast amount of over the counter and prescription acne medication. Topical acne products are by far the most popular choice in the market today even though there are treatment available using antibiotics. Topical acne treatments are applied directly onto the problem areas. These are often over-the-counter products, but topical antibiotics are also available for prescription. 

 

What these products does is that in eliminates bacteria on the skin that cause the formation of acne on the skin. It also works by reducing the chances of infection on the surrounding area. It also works to indirectly keep the pores open. 

 

These products has been around for quite some time and largely remain unchanged throughout the years. Even so, they have been, as a whole, quite successful in treating various types of acne.

 

Clindaamycin is the most commonly used antibiotic for acne treatment.  You can get it in many forms such as lotion, solution and gel. It is applied twice a day to all acne prone areas, and is generally well tolerated but may cause some irritation.  Certain type of skin does not tolerate well with this chemical. Please consult your doctor before applying this product as this product must be obtained by prescription.

 

Erythromycin is another type of topical antibiotic use in treating acne. It is available as a gel, solution or ointment at 2% strength.  This topical treatment is usually applied twice a day at the infected area. Even though some irritation may occur, it is generally well tolerated. It is also safe for use for women who are or may become pregnant.

 

Tetracycline is not a topical acne treatment. It is taken orally. It does come in solution form and ointment with varying strengths. It contains sodium bisulfite, a sulfa derivative, and has been known to cause allergic reactions.  It may also cause yellowing of the skin.  It is, however, a popular oral antibiotic for dermatologists to prescribe, but the same side effects may occur.

 

Metronidazol is used regularly for acne caused by rosacea.  It is available as a gel with .75% strength. The topical acne treatment must be applied twice a day for maximum effect and usually well tolerated but can cause some irritation.

 

There are huge selection of acne topical product that are prescribed by physician and when choosing which product to go for, always take into consideration the type of acne you have, your skin types and the severity of your acne condition. Never go for the harshest (high concentration) acne topical product when you first try out an over the counter product. This may cause certain acne condition to worsen. Always consult your doctor if in doubt.
